ORAL & OROPHARYNGEAL CANCER: WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW - NEW TRENDS AND RISK FACTORS

Course Description:
This course is designed to inform primary care physicians, dentists, as well as medical and dental students, residents, nurses, hygienists, physician assistants, and medical/dental assistants, about oral and oropharyngeal cancer including HPV-associated oral and throat cancers. The course has been divided into two modules, including each of which is followed by case-based approaches to help attendees further understand this condition: epidemic, Risk Factors and Clinical Presentation, Prevention, Vaccination, and treatment options. The primary objective of this course is to provide audiences with a thorough understanding of how to better diagnose and treat patients who have oral or HPV-related oral and throat cancers.
Course Objectives:
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

Discuss the disease burden of oral and HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer worldwide and in Canada.

Emphasizing the changing epidemiology of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and associated risk factors.

Understand the role and responsibility of today’s healthcare providers to diagnose and increase awareness.

Understand the pathophysiology and clinical presentations and new trend in the oral and oropharyngeal cancer
Speakers:


Firoozeh Samim
DMD, MSc, PhD, Dip ABOMP, FRCD(c)
Dr. Samim received her DMD from Shiraz University of Medical Science. She completed the Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology residency program at UBC and obtained her Master of Science in craniofacial and pediatric dentistry. She is currently an assistant professor at McGill University and a staff member of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Health Science Center of NL. Dr. Samim’s expertise lies in the diagnosis, nature and primarily non-surgical management of oral, maxillofacial, and temporomandibular disorders.
Catherine Nolet-Levesque
DMD, MSc, PhD, Dip ABOMR, FRCD(c)
Dr. Nolet-Lévesque completed a DMD degree in the Faculty of Dentistry at Laval University in Quebec City, and a general practice residency at Montreal Children’s Hospital. She also completed a Master’s degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of Toronto, and a fellowship in education at the Women’s College Hospital. Dr. Nolet-Lévesque is also a professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at Laval University where she oversees the undergraduate curriculum and participates in teaching various post-graduate programs.
